waiter slang


Hash-house slang has intrigued me ever since I learned that a non-fat decaf cappuccino is referred to as a "why bother."  Though it has a colorful history dating back to the 1850s, usage is dying out because so are coffee shops and diners.  Maybe some of the terms were overheard by customers who then decided to cancel their order (I think I'd give it a second thought if I ordered hash and heard the waiter holler out "clean up the kitchen"!)  How many of these have you heard of? . . .

  1. That's funny. :) I guess it's called a "why bother" because, really, if you're going to order cappuchino with no fat and no caffeine...why bother? It's no fun.

  2. solo: Yes, I think that was the first bit of waiter slang I heard and it is what inspired my interest in compiling the list. Of course, nowadays I'd rather have a why bother than no cap--which has come to be the choice for me. :(
